    Iron, Fine Octahedrite - IVA
    Great Namaqualand, Namibia (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)

As sculptural objects Nickel-Iron Meteorites are hard to beat. The sensuous scoops and wandering ridges, along with surfaces that coyly engage the eye with intriguing textures and luster, are part of the basis for the attraction of meteorites. The other part revolves around the idea that you can hold in your hand, something from Outer Space; something 4 billion years old - a heady concept and one that never fails to capture the imagination of children everywhere. Most people automatically think of Nickel-Iron Meteorites when the subject comes up, and of the various Nickel-Irons, Gibeon is an outstanding group of such things. Why that is can be seen by examining this 2.2 kg (4 lbs. 24.6 oz) individual, which shows beautiful examples of regmaglypts: places that look like thumbprints, pressed into the metallic surface of the piece. Individuals are considered to be more desirable, as they represent the object as it was found. The oxide patina shown by this Gibeon is a fine example of that delicate balance between removal of adhering soil and oxidation, while still retaining enough oxidation to maintain optimal character.
    Overall Measurements: 4.01 x 3.75 x 2.48 inches (10.2 x 9.5 x 6.3 cm), weights 2.2 kg (77. 6 oz.)
    Offered at no reserve.
