Description
Muonionalusta Meteorite SliceIron, IVA
Northern Sweden - (67° 48'N, 23° 6'E)
Found: 1906
Spanning nearly 19 inches (48 cm) across, this slice of Muonionalusta meteorite is certainly large, and the silvery-gray specimen is rather impressive, as a pronounced Widmanstätten pattern is visible over both of the massive surfaces. The metallic 'latticework' associated with iron meteorites is undeniable with this fine example, and Muonionalusta is the first variety in which the rare mineral Stishovite was discovered to have formed indicating that the meteorite was heavily shocked at some point. This is a complete slice of the "arctic" material thought to have fallen in Northern Sweden nearly one million years ago.
Overall Measurements: 18.98 x 10.59 x 0.16 inches (48.20 x 26.90 x 0.40 cm), weighs 2.23 kilograms (4.91 pounds)
Provenance: Central Coast Collection
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
