Description

Morasko Meteorite - Complete Silicated Iron Meteorite from Eastern Europe
Silicated Iron - IAB
Poznan, Poland
Found: 1914

The Morasko Meteorite Nature Preserve is an important Eastern European locality. Seven Meteorite craters have been identified outside the town of Morasko, Poland-five of which contain small lakes. In 1914, during World War I, the first Meteorite was discovered by German soldiers constructing a military fortification. Since that time, many other masses have been recovered including this example-among the more aesthetic Morasko Meteorites known. Unlike the majority of weathered Morasko masses, the example offered here is very well-endowed. It features patches of fusion crust and scores of regmaglypts-the aerodynamic features acquired by a Meteorite during its fiery descent to Earth-not frequently seen in Moraskos. In addition, an ebony patina with accents of platinum, ochre and sienna hues blanket the Meteorite's highly textured surface. This example also features a crevasse where the Meteorite began to split along a crystalline plane, which only serves to embellish its form. Morasko is classified as an IAB Meteorite-a rare silicated iron, and this is an exemplary example of the Morasko event accompanied by a custom pedestal for impactful display.
