    Description

LARGE AND UNUSUAL MUONIONALUSTA END SECTION
    Fine (IVA) octahedrite
    Kiruna, Norrbotten, Northern Sweden

Although no-one has so far located its impact crater, the Muonionalusta meteorite is believed to have fallen over 800,000 years ago somewhere in the Arctic Circle. Glacial action carried parts of the fall to northern Sweden, where they were first recorded in 1906; the geological conditions and Sweden's legislative restrictions on metal detectors make them extremely difficult to recover, but this excellent example shows that they are well worth the effort. Exhibiting the best of both worlds, it is a large flat end piece, with a great expanse of fusion crust and an etched inner face, exposing the fascinating silvery Widmanstätten patterns of latticed nickel-iron kamacite and taenite. Most remarkable, however, is a distinct line across the sliced face, bordered by a dense concentration of particularly fine stress lines: this is the border between two distinct crystal structures resulting from an incredibly high impact collision between two pieces of the original mass somewhere out in space. It is a highly unusual feature, and only adds to the appeal and fascination of an already excellent specimen, 12 x 9 7/8 x 2 ¼ inches, and weighing 26 lb 7 oz with a metal display stand.
