    Description

    Gibeon Slice
    Iron, fine octahedrite - IVA
    Great Nama Land, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
    3.42 x 2.00 x 0.33 inches (8.71 x 5.08 x 0.84 cm) (197 grams)

The Gibeon Meteorite fell during prehistoric times and is certainly one of the best-known of all the iron meteorites. From a large strewn field in Namibia, this sliced example is substantial at almost 200 grams and is rather thick for a slice of its size. Both cut surfaces exhibit the Widmanstatten pattern as well as a grouping of dark spots adding character to the piece. The Nama people originally discovered the Gibeon Meteorite and actually used pieces to make tools and weapons. It has only minor and expected rusting.
