Description
Gibeon MeteroiteIron, IVA
Great Nama Land, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
Found: 1836
The Gibeon Meteorite that fell during prehistoric times is arguably one of the most aesthetic irons and typically occurs in relatively stable forms. Larger and spectacular examples are known, and this superb specimen certainly qualifies. This zoomorphic shape resembles a cobra with its hood out or an animal's face "mask" with two huge regmaglypts that look like deep eye sockets. This is an exquisitely aesthetic meteorite from a world famous fall. Weighing a significant 27.5 pounds (12.5 kilograms), this dark and mysterious example boasts a dark, rich coloration and an incredible, textural surface. This humongous piece is museum-quality on all counts, and its combination of size and quality puts it in a rarified class. Pieces from the Namibian fall were used as far back as 1836 by the Nama locals for weapons and tools.
Overall Measurements: 8.50 x 7.00 x 5.50 inches (21.59 x 17.78 x 13.97 cm), weighs 12.47 kilograms (27.5 pounds)
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
