Description

Gibeon Meteorite
Iron, IVA
Great Nama Land, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
Found: 1836

To many discerning collectors of meteorites, Gibeon is considered the "Rolls Royce" of the Iron variety. Stability is typically not an issue for the material from Namibia, and examples are often showcases of a number of superlative attributes including the presence of large and defined 'thumbprint' regmaglypts. This giant specimen of the popular and iconic meteorite is quite sizable weighing a huge 17.5 kilograms (38.5 pounds), but its sheer size is only part of this story. This Gibeon displays an exceptional aesthetic shape and form with the classic deep rich coloration. Of particular note, there is a wonderful and quite large rounded crater in the center of the naturally artistic example. This showstopper has everything to offer and terrifically represents one of the most important, popular and attractive of all Iron meteorites. The Gibeon Meteorite fell in prehistoric times and left a strewn field of epic proportions. Discovered by the Nama people, who used pieces of the fine octahedrite to make weapons and tools, the Gibeon has been an important meteorite since it was initially discovered and has remained a favorite of collectors.
Overall Measurements: 13.78 x 7.87 x 4.33 inches (35.00 x 20.00 x 11.00 cm), weighs 15.64 kilograms (34.5 pounds)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
