    Description

    Gibeon Meteorite End Piece
    Iron, fine octahedrite - IVA
    Great Nama Land, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
    4.42 x 2.68 x 1.13 inches (11.22 x 6.81 x 3.34 cm) (506 grams)

This end cut of the famed Gibeon strewn field in Namibia is a unique and attractive specimen of the iron fine octahedrite Meteorite. This piece weighs a sturdy 506 grams and has a nice "flame" form as the rich metallic material rises up to its tapered point. The etched surface exhibits the Widmanstätten pattern of the Meteorite with artistic and geometric, cross-hatched crystallization. The opposite side is muted with some brighter metallic tones on the raised ridges. The shape has a zoomorphic aspect, and the piece is a perfect size - large enough to be significant, yet small enough to display anywhere. The duality of its cut and etched face in contrast with its naturally rugged exterior also makes it an ideal collection specimen. There are minor patches of discoloration on the surface along with a very tiny, but obvious, Troilite bleb.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
