    Iron, fine octahedrite
    Great Nama Land, Namibia
Recovered from the edge of the Kalahari Desert, Gibeon iron meteorites are the bounty of a huge meteorite shower that occurred thousands of years ago when an enormous iron mass (or masses) fragmented upon impact with Earth's atmosphere. This select example exhibits both the internal structure and external character of an iron meteorite to exquisite effect. The exterior surface of this meteorite is draped in a muted gunmetal patina, and several concavities-the likes of which are seen on only the best Gibeon meteorites-are in ample evidence. Dramatically contrasting with its rich external surface, the internal crystalline structure of this specimen bedazzles. This meteorite originated from a planetary body that broke apart (whose fragments are part of the asteroid belt). Upon splitting open, there was little that the hot metallic core could transfer it's heat to in the vacuum of space, so the material stayed somewhat warm, in the absolute cold, for millions of years providing sufficient time for nickel-iron crystals to form. As there is no other environment other than the vacuum of space that provides such long cooling curves, the presence of this latticework, referred to as a Widmanstätten pattern, is diagnostic in the identification of a meteorite. This specimen also contains Neumann bands, the result of a violent impact and consequent shocking of material in space and troilite (iron sulfide) inclusions-another signature hallmark of Gibeon meteorites. This is a superlative representation of the internal and external structure of an iron meteorite. 159 x 99 x 37 mm (6¼ x 4 x 1½ inches) and 1627 grams (3.5 pounds).
    Provenance: Macovich Collection of Meteorites
