Description

Gibeon Meteorite - 49.5 Kilograms
Iron, IVA
Namaland, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
Found: 1836

A meteorite of truly "meteoric" proportions, this example of Gibeon is museum-quality and surely of museum size. Weighing 49.5 kilograms (109 pounds), the metallic mass is massive but also has numerous superlative attributes going for it. The huge offering displays abundant regmaglypts over the majority of its highly textural surface, exhibits a nicely contrasting orangey-red patina, and has the bonus of sitting securely on its own without needing a base. Recorded to have been first found in Namibia, in 1836, it is known that the indigenous Nama people used such metal for tools much earlier. Gibeon material is quite stable, relative to other major Irons, and the combination of shapes and of scallop cratering makes it very popular among collectors. This is a magnificent meteorite not just in terms of scale but also of quality and significance. Bigger is not always better, but it is with this one.
Measurements: 14.96 x 10.24 x 9.84 inches (38.00 x 26.00 x 25.00 cm), weighs 49.5 kilograms (109.12 pounds)

Provenance: Private Pacific Northwest Collection #95-12, Ex. Edwin Thompson
