IRON METEORITESGibeon Iron Meteorite
Iron, fine octahedrite - IVA
Great Nama Land, Namibia - (25° 30'S, 18° 0'E)
Meteorites come in all sizes: from the asteroid sized one that created the Chicxulub impact structure in the Yucatan, to the microscopic ones that we inhale constantly. Many collectors favor ones big enough to show "textbook" meteorite features, but small enough to not need a forklift to move them around. The Gibeon Iron of this Lot is somewhere in that "ideal" zone being large enough to show fine regmaglypts and enough of them to look like a meteorite, yet still small enough at three pounds to be easily portable and displayable. The surface is a mix between an orange-brown oxidation layer in the hollows and gleaming, metallic black accents on the ridges in between. It is a complete individual with excellent form and condition. It bears an ROA accession number on one side - "177".
