    Description

    Dronino Meteorite End Cut
    Iron Ataxite, Ryazan Dist., Russia (54° 44' 48"N, 41° 25' 18"E)
    Found: July 2000

The Dronino Meteorite is classified as an Ataxite which puts it in a classification of iron Meteorites with a high content of nickel which show no Widmanstätten patterning when etched. The stand-up example here is a massive chunk of Dronino weighing a quite substantial 726 grams. This silvery example exhibits a full mirror face of smooth metallic reflection, as no pattern is visible other than sporadic indentation flashes which ironically look like tiny comets on the meteoritic surface. The piece is cut flat on the bottom but is not suitable to keep the piece upright without a base. The balance of the rough exterior appears to have been treated with some acidic solution as the steely rock is "finished" although still sharp and space-like. Ataxites like this dense specimen are composed mainly of meteoric iron and are the most nickel-rich known examples.
    Overall Measurements: 4.92 x 2.13 x 1.85 inches (12.50 x 5.40 x 4.70 cm), weighs 726 gm (25.6 oz.)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
