Description

Canyon Diablo Meteorite
Iron coarse octahedrite - IAB-MG
Meteor Crater, Coconino County, Arizona

The famous Meteor Crater outside of Winslow, Arizona, is the most evident testimonial to the fall of the Canyon Diablo Meteorite which is estimated to have occurred nearly 50,000 years ago but was only first discovered in the late 19th Century. The massive crater helps to put such incomprehensible events into a context of sorts, but even the smallest pieces of the famous Meteorite are rather compelling. As Canyon Diablo is, without question, THE quintessential American Meteorite, quality specimens such as this fairly nice sized individual are a must for any serious collectors. While specimens of this variety are not always the most attractive of the irons, even those with a nice desert patina, any Meteorite with a hole like this one - an occurrence of about one in 1,000 - immediately becomes a specimen with great appeal. With a roughly pencil sized hole right through the dense chunk of extraterrestrial material, this piece has quite a collectible nature. The example features a partially worn collection number appearing to be "37.834."
Overall Measurements: 5.12 x 2.76 x 3.54 inches (13.00 x 7.00 x 9.00 cm), weighs 2.08 kg (4.58 lbs.)
Offered at no reserve.
