DescriptionCampo del Cielo Meteorite with Stand
Iron, IAB-MG (Main Group),coarse octahedrite
Gran Chaco, Argentina
The Field of the Sky is the English translation of Campo del Cielo: a sizable strewn field in the Gran Chaco that hosts these Argentine wonders. The form of this one is very likely the result of accelerated weathering along a fracture acquired during landing. Given a couple of more centuries, this perforated form would probably become two, un-perforated forms, as the slow process of oxidation and weathering out on the Chaco reduced the metallic nickel-iron to little flakes of rust. Fortunately, this one was rescued from the pernicious influences of rain and oxygen, in order to captivate onlookers in other parts of the world. The surface shows metallic pewter luster with minute spots of reddish-brown: vestiges of the water assisted alteration of the mass. It is provided with a custom stand designed to display the wonderful form of the alien visitor from deep space.
