    Description

Campo del Cielo Meteorite (with Hole)
    Iron, IAB-MG (Main Group),coarse octahedrite
    Gran Chaco, Argentina

Meteorites from Campo del Cielo: "The Field of the Sky" have been known since their initial discovery in 1576 by semi-literate foreigners. Undoubtedly, indigenous inhabitants of the area knew of the strange objects long before that date, but the Spaniards and the Portuguese explorers and missionaries were less than interested in local lore and traditions. This "Campo" is unusual as it possess a "burn" hole that is probably the product of considerable weathering and oxidation. Looking vaguely like a mountain with a cave perforating it, the irregular surface of the seven pound mass has been varnished with a brown resinous material that tends to obscure the surface alteration of the meteorite. The naturally flat bottom of the piece is admirably suited to serve as its base, and this idea was obviously noted by a prior owner, who affixed small felt dots on that surface, to save table/cabinet finishes from mutilation by a heavy nickel-iron object.
    Overall Measurements: 5.6 x 4.4 x 4.4 inches (14.1 x 11.1 x 11.1 cm), weighs 3.17 kg (7 lbs.)
    Offered at no reserve.
