    Iron, coarse octahedrite
    Gran Chaco, Argentina
From the Macovich Collection of Meteorites---the most renowned collection of aesthetic iron meteorites in the world-comes what is not only among the most unusual meteorites from Argentina's Campo del Cielo meteorite shower, it's among the more aesthetic iron meteorites period. Meteorites almost never look like the sculptural example offered here which exhibits a most unusual one-inch deep crevasse running its length. Campo del Cielo ("Valley of the Sky") meteorites were first written about in 1576 by Spanish explorers when their unearthly origin had yet to be understood. A meteorite from Campo del Cielo was the first large meteorite displayed at the British Museum of Natural History, and several large "Campo" masses can be found today in the finest museums throughout the world. While the meteorite now offered also features a rare and sought-after naturally formed hole (unseen in the accompanying image), the defining characteristic of this flanged specimen is the shallow fissure that runs along its length-a feature rarely documented. Broad rippled crests accentuate this meteorite's pewter-to-platinum patina. Compelling from any angle in any orientation, this offering embodies every ideal of splendor and wonder of an unconventionally shaped iron meteorite. Accompanied by a custom armature from which it can readily be removed, this meteorite was featured on an episode of the Science Channel's "Meteorite Men." A copy of the program accompanies this lot, as does a Macovich Collection provenance. 328 x 366 x 209 mm (13 x 14½ x 8¼ inches) and 46.2 kilograms (101.75 pounds)
