Some meteorites look like what a meteorite should, and there is admittedly a certain natural fascination with meteorites that are spectacularly large, in size. This is such an example consisting of a seriously big and massive Campo del Cielo Iron Meteorite with exquisite form, superb texture and enormous weight, tipping the scales and registering a whopping 64 kilograms (140 pounds). A glorious, natural shape best characterizes this fantastic 'Campo' that is a wonderful representation of the "Field of Heaven" where it landed in Argentina likely some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago based on an analysis of the craters found there. Records of the Iron specimens being found there date back to 1576, although it is likely that indigenous peoples were familiar with this extraterrestrial material, long before then. Given the total tonnage that has been collected from the system of craters and strewn field, the Campo is possibly the heaviest ever to be collected on Earth. A truly iconic Iron meteorite, the Campo del Cielo is popular among collectors, but specimens with such incredible aesthetic qualities as this superior offering are rare regardless of the volume that fell to Earth centuries ago. This museum-quality stunner features a dramatic shape with an impressive hook feature that bends back over the surface replete with deep 'thumbprint" regmaglypts.
