Description
Campo del Cielo MeteoriteIron, IAB-MG
Chaco, Argentina
Found: 1576/1988
1.61 x 1.15 x 0.73 inches (4.09 x 2.93 x 1.86 cm)
The Campo del Cielo impact is believed to have occurred approximately 5,000 years ago, and the massive strewnfield is roughly 18 km (11 miles) in length and includes at least 25 distinct craters. This fantastic specimen from this gigantic impact exhibits a lovely dark hue with bright silvery highlights and some patches of deep orangey-red. This particular specimen weighs a hefty 64 grams and is aesthetically pleasing with a sculptural form, appearing almost as if it is a hand giving a thumbs up. As with several other meteorites, the Campo del Cielo Meteorite is no longer allowed to be exported from Argentina, meaning there is only a limited quantity of these stunning specimens available for acquisition.
Estimate: $400 - up.
