Description
Campo del Cielo Meteorite - 86.63 KilogramsIron, IAB-MG
Chaco, Argentina
Found: 1576
This enormous Iron meteorite represents the famed Campo del Cielo fall in northern Argentina, one of the most historically significant meteoritic discoveries in the world. First documented by Spanish explorers in 1576, although long known to indigenous peoples beforehand, the Campo del Cielo ("Field of the Sky") strewn field has yielded numerous large Iron masses derived from the fragmentation of a single meteoroid that fell several thousand years ago. Classified as a coarse, octahedrite, Campo del Cielo specimens are composed primarily of Iron and Nickel, formed within the metallic core of a differentiated parent body early in the history of our Solar System.
Weighing an extraordinary 87 kilograms (191 pounds), this example is of undeniable museum size and presence. It is a highly sculptural mass, its form dramatically shaped by atmospheric passage and subsequent terrestrial weathering. The surface exhibits incredible regmaglypt craters, deep, thumbprint-like depressions that animate the Iron with texture and dimensionality, while the exterior displays a rich, dark brown coloration with subtle metallic highlights across its undulating contours. The interplay of cavities, ridges, and natural flow features gives the meteorite a dynamic, almost organic character.
Large Campo del Cielo Irons have long been prized for their historical documentation and commanding physicality, yet examples of this scale and sculptural quality are especially sought after. This specimen stands not merely as a substantial fragment of planetary metal but as a visually compelling and historically resonant relic of one of the earliest recorded meteorite discoveries in the New World.
Measurements: 16.54 x 13.78 x 7.87 inches (42.00 x 35.00 x 20.00 cm), weighs 86.63 kilograms (190.98 pounds)
