    Description

CAMPO DEL CIELO - CLASSIC IRON METEORITE
    Iron, coarse octahedrite
    Gran Chaco, Argentina

About 4000 years ago; a giant iron meteor weighing over 100 tons, impacted a region of Argentina. This event was likely witnessed by natives in the area and passed down in oral tradition until it was reported to the Spaniards in the 1500's that large chunks of iron in the area had originally "fallen from heaven." The oral tradition is probably what gave the region its name; "Campo del Cielo" or "Valley of the Sky." This specimen is a classic example from the famous region; it features gently undulating contours and is a rough hourglass shape when viewed from one side. This meteorite features a glossy dark gray gun-metal patina with speckles of rust-orange across the surface. This classic specimen measures 10½ x 3½ x 3½ inches, weighing 15 lbs 13 ounces, sits snuggly on a custom display stand.
