    Description

CAMPO DEL CIELO - CLASSIC IRON METEORITE
    Iron, coarse octahedrite
    Gran Chaco, Argentina

First reported in 1576, the Campo del Cielo fall has produced some of the largest and most exciting meteorites to be found anywhere in the world. However, only comparatively recently was a new strewn field for this fall discovered - the elliptical area across which many individual meteorites and fragments are "strewn". It is on higher ground and therefore better protected from water and other oxidants in the earth than the field on the valley floor. This classic and compact example is from the later find, covered with the characteristic thumbprint-like regmaglypts, a lovely soft patina with dully shining iron highlights, and also a characteristic smattering of rust-red areas. It measures 7¼ x 5½ inches and is presented on a metal display stand.
