Description

Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres: An Imperial Gold-Inlaid Blackened Steel Presentation Kinjal
21-1/2 x 2-1/4 inches (54.6 x 5.7 cm)

PROVENANCE:
H.R.H. Prince Robert, Duc de Chartres, possibly presented by Emperor Alexander II;
Private Collection, Texas.

Russian Imperial presentation kinjal daggers were elaborately crafted ornamental arms given by the House of Romanov as signs of respect. These double-edged daggers featured intricate silver or gold inlay, niello work, and sometimes precious gemstones. Often presented to honor military men or visiting members of other Royal houses, they showcased exquisite craftsmanship, blending Caucasian and Russian artistic styles.

The offered lot is a rare example of such a work presented by the Russian Imperial House to H.R.H. Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres (1840-1910), a grandson of the last king of the French, Louis Philippe. The scabbard of the kinjal bears not only the Russian Imperial arms, but also the former Royal arms of France, differenced by the label of cadency, allowing the identification of the Duke of Chartres. Prince Robert was a French royal and military officer of the Orléans family. The son of Prince Ferdinand Philippe, Duke of Orléans, he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later in the Franco-Prussian War. A devoted Orléanist, he lived in exile for much of his life due to French republican policies. Robert was known for his military service and contributions to the French army, as well as his patronage of the arts. The kinjal likely dates from the mid-19th century, and may have been a gift on Prince Robert's marriage to his cousin, Princess Françoise of Orléans.
