Tindaro Nero II is an incredibly special work. Mitoraj did very few marble works; aside from their rarity, they were also his favorite. His marble practice was quite different from his bronze process. For a given work, he carefully selected each slab of marble from the mines near Carrera. He would often spend weeks if not months staring at each slab, thinking about the form that might emerge, much like Michelangelo did at the very same mines hundreds of years earlier. It is for that reason that Mitoraj selected Tindaro Nero II as the cover of what was at the time his most expansive text to date, Igor Mitoraj by Bianco Nero. This work will be sold with the catalog. Archival photographs depict Mitoraj signing the work in his studio.
