CONRAD DRESSLER (British, 1856-1940)
Bust of Sir John Mowbray, 1880
Signed on reverse: Conrad Dressler 1880
    30-3/4 (78.1 cm) inches high

Depicting Sir John in a waistcoat, necktie, and overcoat looking straight ahead, the bust situated on a variegated marble socle and a brown plinth, the brass plaque inscribed: John Mowbray, Bart MPDCL, Director of the Society 1846-1863, Chairman of the Society 1863-1899.

    Christie's, London, July 11, 2001, lot 334.

A staunch conservative British politician, Oxford graduate, and a long-term member of the House of Commons, John Mowbray (1815-1899) was born John Cornish, taking the surname of Mowbray after his sonless father-in-law Robert Sterling Cornish in 1847. Although he was elected to his seat in the House of Commons originally from Durham, it is for his 40-year representation of Oxford that he is most well-known. In that sense, being the longest serving member, the title of "Father of the House" was bestowed upon him. He was made a Baronet by Queen Victoria in 1880, the year this portrait bust was completed.
