A sculptor "after the antique," Cesare Lapini specialized in allegorical and genre scenes which were sold through his Florentine studio. At the 1884 Esposizione Generale Italiana di Torino Lipini exhibited his first version of Sorpresa. Proving to be a popular subject, Lapini repeated the model in various sizes, the present lot being one of the largest and finest examples.
