    Tonglushan Mine, Daye Co.
    Huangshi, Hubei

Not only does this most unique specimen feature an unusual shape, the piece also has quite a history. From the ancient Copper mine that was actually the source of material for the Bronze Age cultures of Southern China, this amazing Malachite "brain" was displayed in an exhibition at Yale University from 2016 to 2020 for the reopening of the Peabody Museum David Friend Mineral Hall for a celebration of Minerals as Art. This is a wonderfully formed example with an incomparable texture over the "organic" form. Such continuous Copper workings did not produce preserved specimens like this one until rather recently, and such examples have a distinctive look and appearance from the popular African material. Accompanied by an engraved acrylic base, this was acquired from a China Miners Cooperative in 2014. The rich green coloration is superb, and consistent across the botryoidal rock, which is hard, heavy and solid. A noticeable luster adds to the visual appeal of this specimen, which has an intriguing underside, and only one "bubble" on the primary surface is damaged as this piece is in excellent overall condition.
    Measurements: 3.64 x 3.44 x 2.94 inches (9.25 x 8.75 x 7.48 cm)

Provenance: Ex. Robert Lavinsky Collection, Ex. Yale University Exhibition
