    Description

    Theodore Seuss Geisel (American, 1904-1991)
Suess Navy, National Motorboat Show -- Standard Oil advertisements (two works), 1934-41
Ink, watercolor, and crayon on board; Ink and watercolor on paper
    5 x 8.25 in. (image, largest)
    One signed lower center

Standard Oil commissioned Theodore Geisel, universally known as Dr. Suess, to design their Essomarine booth at the National Motorboat Show in 1934. The artist would continue to do so for the next 7 years. Designing everything from highball glasses to certificates to ashtrays, Dr. Suess created the popular Suess Navy. In this lot are two original works of art created by the artist's own hand. The first and largest, is the signed original illustration for the Admiral Certificate for the 1936 show. The second, slightly smaller work, is an Official When-Hen illustration that depicts the various Jigger Tides published for the show in 1939. Also, included in this lot is a Suess Navy flag from 1937 and a Nuzzlepuss Ashtray from 1939 as well as two copies of Secrets of the Deep Volume I and Volume II pamphlets, a copy of The Log of a Good Ship, and two photocopies of Admiral certificates. This group lot reveals not only the ingenuity of Dr. Suess, even before his famous children's books, but also his range of marketing skills from dishware to personalized mementos -- each as engaging as the last.

Condition Report*: The Admiral Certificate measures 5 x 8.25 inches (image) and the board measures 9.25 x 14 inches; the vellum with crayon and ink detailing is only partial with losses, tears, and creases throughout; on the board, there appears to be no condition issues affecting the image, however, two horizontal creases are above the top of the board and light surface grime and edge wear with bumps and a notch of loss to lower right corner due to handling; framed under glass to 13.5 x 18.25 inches; the When-Hen illustration has light surface grime and a few handling creases; not examined out of frame; framed under glass to 13.25 x 16.25 inches.
