This work was initially created as a study for an interior Saturday Evening Post illustration for an article titled Norman Rockwell Visits a Country School (November 2, 1946). More significant is the work's second life, as one of the key illustrations from Norman Rockwell's instructional book for The Famous Artists School, The Famous Artists Advanced Program by Norman Rockwell (Institute of Commercial Art, 1948). The work appears on page four of this volume, in the section that describes Rockwell's process of making a charcoal drawing. The work is published with the caption: "This shows an early stage in the final painting. Note how closely I followed the drawing, composition, and values which I had established so carefully in my charcoal drawing."
The Famous Artists School is legendary within the history of American illustration. Founded in 1948, the correspondence-course program counted many of the country's most prominent commercial artists as part of its faculty, most notably Rockwell.
Generations of students were given their first art instruction through this intentionally accessible program, and original art such as this by Rockwell which was used in his Famous Artist School instructions has both historic and artistic significance.
