J. C. LEYENDECKER (American 1874 - 1951)
Kuppenheimer Men, advertisement study, c. 1931
    Oil on canvas
    20.75 x 28 in.
    Not signed
This handsome preliminary was created for the last known image that Leyendecker created for the Kuppenheimer account. The finished painting is known to have appeared on an easel-backed cardboard point-of-purchase display. J. C. Leyendecker's relationship with Kuppenheimer began in 1909, thanks in part to his brother Frank who had started working with the clothing manufacturer first. J. C. Leyendecker produced the great majority of the celebrated Kuppenheimer advertising imagery from the late teens through the twenties. His unparalleled fashion images were used for style books, magazine advertisements, salesman and trade publications, billboards and point-of-purchase efforts that included stand-up easels, posters, and display placards.
