    Description

    Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (German, 1886-1969)
    Blueprint for the Farnsworth House, Plano, Illinois, 1949
    Cyanotype on paper
    35-1/2 x 61-1/2 inches (90.2 x 156.2 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
    Frank Lloyd Wright Collection, Taliesin, Wisconsin, until circa 1968;
    Former member of the Taliesin Fellowship, Wisconsin;
    Private American Collection.

    Frank Lloyd Wright's release of his Wasmuth portfolio, published in Germany in 1911, helped form his reputation among European architects as a leading architectural voice, a rare thing for an American (most influence cross the Atlantic in the other direction for so much of the 20th century). As much as his works, translated to paper, provided such inspiration to a generation of European architects, the impact works on paper had over Wright throughout his career is recognized, especially his collections of Japanese prints among others. While it is unknown under what circumstances this rare blueprint of Mies van der Rohe's masterpiece came to Wright, the two did meet when Mies moved to Illinois, and it is interesting to note that Wright did hold the Farnsworth print his Taliesin archive though he was not chosen by Edith Farnsworth to design it.
