Born in Kobe, Japan, in 1931, Kazuo Wakabayashi studied painting at the Nikki School of Fine Art before immigrating to Brazil in 1961. As a member of the Seibi Group, which organized Japanese artists living in Brazil, including Manabu Mabe and Tomie Ohtake, Wakabayashi exhibited his work in 1965 at the Rockefeller Center in New York. He is the recipient of the Grand Prize in the 1951 Fine Arts Salon of Hoygo, Japan; the Grand Gold Medal in the 1963 Salon of Modern Art, São Paulo; and the Purchase Prize at the Ninth São Paulo Biennial in 1967. Wakabayashi's vivid abstractions combine monochromatic fields, textural brushwork, and encrusted collage elements.
Overall very good condition: slight craquelure in upper right quadrant.
