A native of Montevideo, Jorge Páez Vilaró trained briefly with fellow Uruguayan painter Vicente Martín, developing an expressionistic style, and he was further exposed to contemporary art trends on travels to Europe. His paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout South America, the United States, and Europe, notably "South American Art Today," organized by the Dallas Museum of Art in 1959, and a one-man show at the Pan-American Union in Washington, D.C., in 1961. A leader in the Uruguayan art world, Vilaró has promoted various South American artists, written art criticism, and founded galleries throughout the country.
