Considering himself a self-taught artist, he briefly trained in 1954 with the Chilean painter Nemesio Antúnez. Arnal received the Patiño Foundation grant which enabled him to study in Paris in 1966. He has participated in several individual and group exhibitions throughout South America, the United States, and Europe and has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Grand Prize for Painting at the 1955 Salón Municipal, La Paz, and First Prize at the 1975 INBO Biennial, La Paz. Arnal also taught painting at the Universidad Católica Boliviana in La Paz.
