Dolores Soldevilla Nieto, primarily known as Loló Soldevilla, spent her early years as a political activist. From 1930 on she was arrested several times for participating in activities against the Gerardo Machado dictatorship in Cuba. After the fall of the regime she maintained her revolutionary attitude and in 1935 was imprisoned several months at the Women's Prison of Guanabacoa. She participated actively in the campaigns in support of the Spanish Republic after the outbreak of the Civil War. In the elections to the Constitutive Assembly of 1940 she was elected a deputy member. As a member of the Partido Revolucionario Cubano (Auténtico) in the elections of 1946 she became a representative for the province of Oriente. In 1948 she began to paint, and in February of the following year, disappointed by the political corruption, she resigned to her position in the House of Representatives. Shortly afterwards she traveled to Paris, where she entered the Grande Chaumière Academy and made the first two exhibitions of her paintings at the Monaco Salon and the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1950 she returned to Cuba and presented a solo show at the Lyceum & Lawn Tennis Club. Months later she traveled to Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Great Britain, Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1952 she exhibited at the Palacio de Santa Cruz of Valladolid, and after her return to Cuba she presented her paintings and sculptures at the Sociedad Cultural Nuestro Tiempo. From there she became a professor of Fine Arts at the School of Architecture of the University of Havana and had her works displayed in both national and international galleries.
