Born and raised in Paraguay, Carlos Colombino epitomizes the avant-garde in Latin America. After studying architecture at the Universidad Nacional in Ascunción, he ventured to Madrid and Paris in the late 1960s and then returned to Paraguay, where he experimented with woodcut paintings called xylopinturas. This medium - wood reliefs stained with oils and paints emphasizing the tones and grains in the wood - quickly became his hallmark. Colombino was part of the Neofiguración movement in 1970s Paraguay, which promoted expressive figurative art, and many of his subjects comment on the harsh military dictatorships of Latin America. Notably, Colombino won the 1963 Prize for Painting, Art of America and Spain, from the Insituto de Cultura Hispánica, Madrid, and the Grand Prize in the 1968 Biennial of Quito.
