    Orthoceras sp., Agoniatites sp.
    Sahara Desert, near Talmud, Morocco

One thinks one knows the character of the Devonian fossil marble from North Africa and then a piece like this comes along. Cut from a single large piece of 400 million year old fossiliferous marble it boasts a striking Ammonite shell near the centre, vividly and naturally colored in white and gray. This is a fine if familiar feature of marble from this region; less common, however, is the lovely wavy patterning of the background, instantly evocative of the sea shore. In fact, in shades of red and brown with speckled black patterning, it probably represents the natural undulations of the ancient ocean floor and the effect is one of great natural aesthetic beauty, further dotted with the ghostly remains of the cone-shaped Orthoceras belemnite. With sloping beveled edges this unique and beautiful tabletop measures 39¼ x 21¾ inches.
