    Description

    "BIG RED" PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB
    Triassic, Chinle Formation
    Arizona, USA

During the Late Triassic, some 200 million years ago, large tree trunks accumulated in ancient river bends and were periodically buried by sediments containing volcanic ash. Groundwater dissolved silica from the ash and carried it into the logs, where micro-crystalline Quartz replaced the organic matter cell by cell through capillary attraction. The result was petrification of the logs, which retained their original form but not their organic components. Various metal salts mixed with the clear silica resulted in the fabulous colors displayed by Arizona Petrified Wood, prized worldwide as some of the finest fossil material available.

Petrified Wood is certainly one of the most common and easily identified varieties of all fossils. Of course, only a very small percentage of Petrified Wood has any serious appeal or value. Arguably, the most beautiful of all Petrified Wood in the world comes from Arizona, with this material being so coveted for the intensity and range of the colors present. The internationally known locality produces many large logs and, in certain rare instances, much larger specimens that can be cut and polished into amazing slabs and tabletops, filled with rainbows of colors and intricate patterning. This piece is one such specimen. Measuring an unbelievable diameter of seven and a half feet, this giant slab, known as "Big Red," was cut and polished by the foremost purveyor of large Petrified Wood. It was mined from the famous Chinle Formation of Arizona. This Triassic monolith is literally almost too big to be believed. In addition to its principally deep red coloration, this piece displays patches of many other vibrant colors and even several contrasting areas where sand filled fissures, indicating that this slab was very near the end of the log. This is a statement piece to be sure and certainly showcases why Araucarioxylon arizonicum is the "State Fossil of Arizona."

This incredible specimen simply has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The enormous slab has been polished to a fine degree highlighting the intense colors of the exceptional fossil. It is reinforced with a wood and fiberglass backing to ensure its durability for generations to come. An example of the best quality Petrified Wood which is 99 percent pure Quartz, this piece is virtually impervious to stain and is extremely hard, making it a very durable, utilitarian surface. This piece has actually been designed to function as a working tabletop, and this would be a truly one-of-a-kind addition to any private or professional décor.
    Overall Measurements: 90 x 64 x 2 inches (229 x 163 x 5 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
