DescriptionSTONE CANYON JASPER SPHERE
Coalinga, California, USA
Besides being an old American term for what would now be called a 'hick' or a 'bubba,' Jasper is also a much, much older term for a silica or chalcedony based stone, typically with variegated colors and patterns, some of which are unique to specific localities. Which is why this particular example, showing ocher breccia fragments with occasional red areas, floating in a white and gray background, can be identified as having come from the Stone Canyon area near Coalinga in Central California. The locality is on a ranch and is reported to be closed to collectors due to liability/trespass problems in the past. This fine example measures 4.08 inches (10.37 cm) in diameter and is in excellent condition showing good polish and patterns.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.
