Description

INCREDIBLE ORBICULAR GRANITE SPHERE FROM AN ATYPICAL LOCALITY
    Caldera, Chile

This incredible sphere made of Orbicular Granite (also known as "Orbiculite") comes from the unique locality of Caldera, Chile. Almost a third of orbicular rock occurrences are in Finland, and most of the Orbicular Granite seen on the market today comes from Western Australia. Orbicular Granite is an uncommon plutonic rock which typically features a granitic composition. This intrusive igneous rock crystallized from magma cooling below the Earth's surface and has a unique appearance due to the inclusion of orbicules, or concentrically layered, spheroidal structures in the rock. This massive sphere exhibits a stunning pattern of blackish variegated orbicules measuring as large as 3.5 x 3 inches (8.89 x 7.72 cm) which blankets a canvas of cream and white. This phenomenal specimen is 11 inches (27.94 cm) in diameter and has a fine polish. It weighs an impressive 48 kilograms (105.6 pounds). Its immense size coupled with its exquisite appearance virtually ensures that this piece will not go unnoticed in any setting.
