Description

Azurite Sphere
Poteryaevskoe Mine, Rudnyi Krai
Western Siberia
Russia

Azurite is an iconic mineral found all over the world. This particular example hails from the exotic Poteryaevskoe Mine in Russia, which is an uncommon locality for the type. Azurite is a by-product of Copper and is an idiochromatic mineral with a distinct rich blue hue. This spectacular sphere was cut by a renowned Russian lapidary who took care while cutting and polishing. The artist used an exponentially larger piece of collector-grade Azurite and precisely cut it into this highly decorative orb measuring over 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter. This material's natural characteristics and beautiful blue color are on full display as pockets of lustrous drusy Azurite and patches of green Malachite draw the viewer in for a closer look. Each cavernous section is full of Azurite crystals, which glisten as the sphere is moved and viewed. Furthermore, each chamber is emphasized further by darker blue segments of Azurite, creating dramatic contrast. Great skill and expertise were needed to make this decorative object which is in excellent condition. This ornate sphere is a top example of a highly sought-after material.
Measurements: 3.21 inches (8.15 cm) in diameter
