Inakusraishi Mine
    Shakotan Peninsula
    Shiribeshi Province
    Hokkaido, Japan

This uniquely shaped cabinet piece was purchased directly from the Inakuraishi Mine in Japan during the early 1960's. At that time, this complete uncut plate was the largest one of its type to ever be discovered there. During the past 50 years, practically all high lapidary quality grade Rhodochrosite has come from Argentina with very little seen from other historic localities. This rare world class delicately patterned find comes from a vanished time and place - from a bygone era when mining activity was still taking place in the Land of the Rising Sun. This unique specimen exhibits both sub-botryoidal or mammillary crystal habit. The contour polished front face features lustrous rose red clusters that feature intricate patterns resulting in an exquisite display specimen more like an artist's sculpture than the uncut cabinet piece that it is. The reverse side is covered with a druzy pink rind that is appealing in its own right. The definite unique shape and exceptional size of this piece make it a truly "one-of-a-kind" specimen that draws one's eyes to look at it in any room in which it is displayed. This polished piece of lapidary art stands securely in a custom base handmade out of teak wood. This superb collector piece is definitely a rare find.
    19.5 x 13 inches (49.53 x 33.02 cm) and weighs 42 pounds (19.09 kg).

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
