    Stromatolite Slab
    Biwabik Iron Formation
    Mary Ellen Mine, Mesabi Range, St. Louis Co.
    Minnesota, USA

    This unique slab was created by stromatolites or algal flora billions of years ago. The particular species which created this bold slab are known as Collenia undosa and are today without extant populations. Once these microorganisms were buried in a shallow sea they oxidized the local Iron creating this beautiful red jasper. This 34 inch slab (86.36 cm) displays deep reds, blacks, yellow and silver which are mostly created by varieties of Hematite and white Quartz. The result is gorgeous and commonly referred to as Mary Ellen Jasper, as it yields from the Mary Ellen Mine in Minnesota, USA. The breathtaking slab has been cut and polished to display this unique pattern highly sought after by collectors. The organic shape accentuates the natural color pockets in this fine specimen.
