Description
Sculptural Calcite BowlAndes Mountains
Argentina
South America
This spectacular ornamental bowl was fashioned out of a much larger piece of rare blue Calcite from a remote region in the Andes Mountains of Argentina. The quarry resides 14,000 feet up in the mountains and produced this gorgeous lapidary-grade stone, sometimes also referred to as "Onyx." The material was formed in Pliocene beds with varying geological strata of compact and porous layers hosted discordantly in sedimentary and metamorphic rock. The Calcite was made with solid layers which have been cut and exhibit deep ocean blue, light aqua blue and blue-green coloration accented by bands of earthy browns and swirls of creamy whites. This attractive bowl has been cut in such a way to maximize the natural banding and rich color which is only achieved by cutting deep into the rock. Stylistically, this large bowl, which measures an impressive 27.95 inches (71 cm), was carved into an organic shape with rough edges and a smooth deep interior leaning it towards a rustic appearance. Calcite rates a 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale for hardness, making it an ideal stone for utilitarian pieces such as this decorative and functional bowl. This natural piece is in excellent condition and will add a nice pop of color to any room. It is somewhat daunting to think how large a piece of rough was needed to create such a truly remarkable decorative bowl.
Overall Measurements: 27.95 x 14.57 x 7.09 inches (71.00 x 37.00 x 18.00 cm)
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
