    Mammuthus primigenius
    Siberia, Russia

A perfect combination of natural history and the scrimshander's artistry, this wonderfully weathered and aged tusk section has been polished smooth in one area and decorated with a panoramic scene from the Ice Age time when the tusk's original owner walked the earth. We are on a grassy plain, before a mountainous background. In the center, a herd of three woolly mammoth display their finely-curved tusks, whilst five further mammoth stalk the plain in the distant background. To the left, three horned bison approach, and from its rocky perch on the right an enormous saber-toothed tiger rears and roars. The smooth section on which the scrimshaw has been so finely rendered is contrasted effectively with the remainder of the 34-inch tusk, rough and weathered, with cracks and fissures, bearing the aged ivory shades of cream and tan and generously spotted with patches of blue from the mineral-bearing ice that seeped into the porous ivory over thousands of years spent buried in the tundra. The scrimshaw scene is signed by Geoff Olson, 2006. For 22 years Mr Olson has spent his summers fishing in Alaska and his winters carving scrimshaw.
