Rainforest Jasper Skull Statue: "Skull of Honor"
    Artist: Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio
    Stone source: Australia

War being an honorable profession; we have before us a permanently retired member of those honorable ranks, given form using the variegated Rainforest Jasper from Australia. Our permanently smiling skull-at-arms has been given the Luis Quispe treatment, as revealed by a couple of sly and subtle digs. The Pickelhaube helmet that he proudly sports is a holdover from the days of the Kaiser and trench warfare: a bloody business completely at odds with the glorious pictures painted by recruiters for that mass tragedy. Many police and military groups in South America still wear a version of this venerable headgear. Tradition dies hard. Next, in the subtle hints category, is what's under that spiky Stetson. This is the only one of the collection that you are invited to remove the headpiece, suggesting that our old "war dog" might need to have his head examined. Either that, or Dr. Lecter has gotten to him first. The base for this lapidary commentary is of deep black Obsidian with vermeil furniture bearing helmeted skulls at the corners.
