Artist: Peter Müller
Stone Source: for parrots: Longido, Arusha, Tanzania; for base: Brazil

Master carver Peter Müller has created a tour de force with this life-size carviing of three Ruby parrots. They have been carved from solid Ruby and Zoisite from Tanzania. Ruby has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale (only Diamonds are harder) and is very difficult to carve. Making the situation more complicatied is the fact that Zoisite is a much softer stone with a hardnes of only 6-7 - so the danger of undercutting when working this material is extreme. The Ruby is a very rich cranberry red and strongly contrasts with the emerald green zoisite that is interwoven with black hornblende. The size of the original Ruby crystals must have been enormous because the Ruby areas of the parrots are very sizable.

The three parrots are engaged in conversation while perched on a base of Albite, Mica and Tourmaline. Each of the parrots is extremely detailed, down to the pinfeathers, with Garnet eyes, Carnelian beaks, and gold-plated Sterling Silver feet. Two of them are engaged in animated discussion with their wings spread, while a third parrot sits observing them. They measure from 9.5 inches in body length and with their wings outspread they are between 10 inches to 11.25 in width. The base is a massive specimen of sparkling white Albite blades, accented throughout by dark green Tourmaline crystals with occasional books of Mica. All of this sits on an acrylic plinth that is 13.5 x 10 x 4 inches (34.3 x 25.4 x 10.2 cm). The entire sculpture is an imposing 36 inches (91.44 cm) in height, with the life-sized parrots adding an animated component to this sculpture.
