DescriptionMorrisonite Jasper Sculpture: "Twist"
Sculptor: Perry Brent Davis
Stone Source: Morrison Ranch, near Owyhee Mountains, Oregon
It took the trained eye of gemologist and sculptor, Perry Davis, to visualize what a rough chunk of Jasper could become. The process starts by winnowing through, literally, tons of lapidary material brought to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, by dealers and miners from all over the world. Out of those many tons, a piece of Morrisonite Jasper from the remote Owyhee Mountains, on the border between Oregon and Idaho, caught his eye. Returning to his studio, he spent several days turning the piece over and over, slowly becoming familiar with the complex patterns and various colors that the surface displayed. He built, in his mind's eye, a mental model of what the interior might hold based on the surface features. That mental model guided the collaboration between Davis and his Chinese artists: from a mental picture and a rock, through the initial carving, then an evaluation of what internal features the carving revealed, followed by final "adjustments" based on that, now visible, internal structure. The final form being established, it falls to the skilled artists to remove all traces of the sculpting process, and replace them with a perfectly smooth and reflective surface that begs to be touched. Handle the piece. Notice that the exquisite finish extends even into the most remote crevices. See the variegated and complex patterns of green, gold, and red. Most of all, feel the sensual, curving surfaces. Sometimes, seeing isn't the only way to appreciate fine art. It has a custom, revolving stand, designed to show off the work from all directions. This pristine sculpture is signed and bears Davis's unique reference number "212." A custom carrying case safely houses the sculpture for transport.
