Description

    Malachite
Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

The Copper Crescent of Katanga is a sprawling and ill-defined area that is rich in mineral wealth. Malachite plays a large part in this neighborhood as one of the main ore minerals. 99.999% of the Malachite mined in the Congo is only suitable for ore, with a very small percentage being specimen or lapidary grade. "Normal" size for "keepers" is anything up to "football" dimensions and large is anything bigger. Upon inspection one would grudgingly have to admit that this Malachite plate exceeds the limits of "big" and enters the realm of humongous. Size alone is not the only factor in determining desirability or value; the color and pattern displayed have their part to play as well. Showing classic Malachite green color, this giant plate features a whole army of "bullseyes" liberally scattered over the upper surface of the mass. Minor traces of Turquoise blue Chrysocolla appear in between the layers of Malachite. There is a spot on one corner that has delaminated along a Chrysocolla layer: not an uncommon occurrence and not of any great consequence. The massive piece is well polished and in excellent condition.
    Overall Measurements: 25 x 19.75 x 3.5 inches (63.5 x 50.17 x 8.89 cm)
