DescriptionCondor Banded Agate Sculpture: "Long Face"
Sculptor: Perry Brent Davis
Stone Source: Condor Mine, San Rafael Department, Mendoza, Argentina
The varieties of Agate are many, yet so variable, that connoisseurs can identify the origin of better ones, simply by looking at them. One of the more recent discoveries was in the mountains of Mendoza Province, Argentina. The brilliant colors and strong patterns of what became known as Condor Agate were not even known before 1993. Now Agate aficionados all over the globe know the name. Usually Condor Agate is presented as: simple, cut and polished geodes; but Perry Davis had the vision to imagine this wonderful material as a part of something greater. Letting the stone dictate its final form, Davis saw that a face was suggested by the rough stone: a face inchoate, but with patient sculpting skills, he thought that the face might be exposed, and given greater definition. Months later, an abstract form suggestive of a head emerged, but a head of who or what? The final effect is almost Cubist in its ability to imply: an enigmatic head, in three dimensions. The flaming reds of the Agate are accented by black areas shot full of thin lines and concentric "eyes" in blood red. Situated in the center of the piece is a completely different area: a "geode" filled with colorless Quartz crystals - it is surrounded by a banded zone that faithfully follows the contours of the colorless Quartz. Polish and finish are done impeccably, in keeping with the Davis emphasis on perfection of workmanship. The sculpture is designed to mate with a stone and metal base, that allows easy rotation of the piece. It is Perry Brent Davis work number 157. A fitted hard case is provided to protect the work while being transported. The "Long Face" is in excellent and pristine condition.
