Agate Bowl: "Freeform"
    Sculptor: Perry Brent Davis
Stone Source: Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

The Chinese gem carving tradition goes back thousands of years and, now, a new tradition is being forged in the sinuous polished sculptures created by a collaboration between American gemologist and sculptor: Perry Brent Davis, and, a small group of Chinese master carvers, who execute Davis's designs using materials he has specifically chosen. One of the things that sets Davis, and his staff, apart is their insistence on using only raw materials harder than steel; creating so-called "Hard Stone Carvings." Hard-stone sculpting is much more laborious and demanding, particularly in a larger size range, but Davis believes that by using such materials and techniques, he achieves a higher level of artistry, ensuring long-term appreciation and respect for his works over the coming decades. In spite of the rigorous demands imposed on the carvers by the raw materials, the end result can either be as light as fine porcelain, or, massive and powerful. As an exemplar of the "light as porcelain" motif, Perry has created an agate bowl with an undulating, fluted rim. He calls it "freeform" and, in fact, the only way it can be carved is by using free-hand techniques. The raw material is Agate that shows a wide variety of inclusions: everything from dark "bulls-eyes" to ghostly outlines composed of tiny dots like poppy seeds, set against the tan, blue, and gold banding of the Agate. Held up to a light, the translucence of the piece brings a depth to the patterns, that belies the thinness of the bowl. It is in pristine condition and bears his unique reference number: 26.
